Cairngorms National Park in Scotland is a relatively unknown photography destination. That’s why international award winning fine art and conservation photographer Garth Lenz is organizing a photo tour here for Nature Talks. The park is the largest in the United Kingdom and is only an hour’s drive from Inverness. And it’s not only big, but also high! Five of the six highest mountains in Scotland are located in this park and it hosts a beautiful collection of different landforms: from granite rocks and remnants of volcanic eruptions to remnants of glaciers from the ice age. Perhaps most importantly of all, it holds the largest remaining intact tracts of the Caledonian Forest. It is therefore no coincidence that, according to National Geographic, Cairngorms National Park is one of the top 20 places in the world to visit.

Do you want to photograph under the guidance of top fine art photographer and environmental photojournalist Garth Lenz in one of the most beautiful and extensive nature reserves in Scotland and also enjoy beautiful fall colour and solitude? Then let Nature Talks and Garth take you to this photographer’s Mecca in the Cairngorms.

Cairngorms: intimate wild native forest landscapes, lochs and lochans reflecting peak autumn colour, and home to diverse species and landforms

Found only in Scotland, the Caledonian forest once covered a large portion of the country. These native pinewoods are made up of a mixture of Scots pine, juniper, birch, willow, yew, rowan and aspen. They are characterized by huge and gnarled “granny” pines that can grow to be very old and large. The mixture of deciduous and coniferous species, highlighted by autumn colour , and set amongst the many lochs and lochans makes for a spectacular subject which offers endless possibilities for personal expression.

These forests are home to red squirrels and Scottish wildcats, golden eagles, red deer and pine martens together with more elusive creatures such as capercaillie and Scottish crossbill. Reindeer, which went extinct in the UK 8000 years ago were re-introduced in the Cairngorms in the early 1950’s and are the U.K’s only free ranging herd and we will have an opportunity to visit and photograph these iconic animals.

On the road with fine art and conservation photographer Garth Lenz

This is your chance if you want to go on the road with an internationally acclaimed award winning conservation photographer who can guide you during the photo trip, help you with your questions and with whom you can speak about your photography and receive personal guidance. An absolute added value to this trip. Garth Lenz is a top nature photographer and has earned his spurs on a global level. He makes fine art photos and publishes articles and photos about nature conservation in the most prestigious magazines and he is an expert in narrative photography and storytelling. He will guide you to the most beautiful locations and help you expand your creative abilities to produce beautiful images of this unique landscape. Garth has a great passion for helping photographers reach new creative heights in their photography.

This photo trip is especially suitable for nature and landscape photographers who are already a bit further in their photography.

Transformation into a warmly coloured world

We are in the Cairngorms at the peak of Autumn when golden colour transforms the forest landscape. Time seems to pass more slowly at this time of year. Every moment demands attention, every change a painting in the making. As the birch forests of the Scottish Highlands turn increasingly golden and the high peaks may be covered in the first snows of early autumn, Cairngorms National Park transforms into a nature photographer’s paradise. Finely sculpted mists envelop mirror-smooth lakes. Ancient Scots pines, withered for more than three centuries, stand like a sentinel against fiery sunsets. In this time of year the Scottish Highlands are a landscape of enchanting beauty, enhanced by a clarity and quality of light that is unique in the UK.

Inspiration at every turn

Our primary photographic subject, the Caledonian Forest, is a vast ancient woodland with Scots pines, birches, rowan, yew, willow, aspen, and juniper, and is considered one of the most important habitats for biodiversity conservation in Scotland and one of the largest remaining primeval forests in Europe. When we visit in late October, this forest will be at its most spectacular with Autumn colour and light, and the many beautiful loch and lochans to reflect this stunning forest landscape. Whether you’re passionate about forests, the quiet beauty of a dewdrop on an autumn leaf, or the endless possibilities of intimate and abstract images that one of Europe’s largest and most beautiful remaining native forests offers – in the Cairngorms, you’ll find inspiration at every turn.

Day 1:
We fly from Amsterdam to Inverness. Then we travel by minibus in about 1 hour to the hotel. Dinner is served there and we will have a group meeting to get to know one another and a presentation on the area by resident photographer and environmental leader Peter Cairns. Depending on when we arrive, there will also be an option to explore some of the wonderful photographic opportunities on the lodge’s doorstep before dinner.

Day 2 to 6:
Our aim during this photo tour is not only to capture the classic scenic beauty of the highlands, but we will also get creative artistically and transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. We explore patterns, shapes and textures and look at the creative use of light and composition, various creative techniques, and the use of filters. Garth will be available and eager to provide individual instruction and will also make suggestions to the group at each location to help stimulate your photographic explorations.

In addition, there is attention to conveying atmosphere and messages in your photos and creating photo stories in order to not just create memorable images of the area but to tell the unique story of the Caledonian Forest and the Cairngorms. At the same time, our attitude remains flexible so that we can respond at any moment to circumstances as they arise, taking into account the weather, light and time of day, and the interests of our group.

In the evening we will share images and experiences from the day, as well as enjoy presentations, explore approaches to post processing images, and relax and prepare for the following day’s adventures.

Our photographic adventure includes visits to ancient pine forests, hidden glens with autumn colours, vast moorlands and quiet Lochs and Lochans reflecting beautiful forest scenes and autumn colour. From our very pleasant base in Glenfeshie we take full advantage of the beautiful natural landscape that is right on our doorstep. Our program runs from “dawn till dusk”.

We stay every day in the rustic beauty in the very comfortable lodge located in the heart of Cairngorms National Park. The lodge is tailored to the needs of photographers and, for example, adjusts the timing and manner of meals accordingly.

Day 7:
We will have breakfast at the hotel and then take the minibus to Inverness airport where we will start the return journey home. When you arrive home, you will look back on a spectacular photo tour and you will definitely have a hard drive full of memorable images and a spirit restored and inspired by the beauty you have shared with your colleagues.

Pracitcal Information for Your Photography Trip

Participants Meeting

Well in advance of the departure date, we will hold a participant meeting to help you prepare for the trip and to meet your fellow travellers. For those who are interested, we can also arrange a post-trip gathering to share and review each other’s work.

Accommodation

During this photography trip, we stay in a cozy lodge on the edge of Ballintean. The rooms are equipped with their own bathroom and toilet.

Fitness Level

Most sites are accessible via a short walk requiring only a reasonable level of fitness. You should be able to walk up to 1 km over uneven ground. The rough terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions can feel challenging at times. It is possible to experience three seasons in one day.

Outbound and Return Travel

You will need to purchase a return flight ticket to Inverness for this trip. This is not included in the tour price.
Once the minimum number of participants is confirmed, we will send you an email with flight recommendations. If you prefer, we can also book the tickets for you — please let us know.

Transport and Flights

On-site transport:
Transport during the trip will be by minibus or passenger cars.

Checked and Hand Luggage:
Checked luggage on flights is usually limited to 23 kg per person. Your photography equipment (excluding your tripod, which should be checked in as hold luggage) should be carried as hand luggage.
Airlines also have restrictions on the size and weight of hand luggage — please check your airline’s website for details. In addition to your camera backpack, a small shoulder bag or laptop bag is usually permitted. However, it is best to store your laptop in your camera backpack if there is room.
You can carry extra weight on your person — for example, by wearing a camera around your neck or using a photo vest or jacket with strong pockets.

Soft Bags or Suitcases:
To make travel easier — both on the flight and during photography outings on the islands — it’s important to keep your luggage to a minimum. Soft bags or flexible suitcases are preferable, as they are easier to stack and transport.

Equipment and Materials

For this trip, we recommend bringing lenses suitable for landscape photography — wide-angle, standard, and short telephoto zoom (roughly between 16 mm and 200 mm). Depending on your interests and specialisation, a longer telephoto zoom may also be useful for wildlife photography. Additionally, please bring:

  • A sturdy tripod (important due to possible windy conditions);

  • Filters (polarising, neutral density, graduated ND, and Big and/or Little Stopper);

  • Something to protect your camera for rain, like plastic cover and light towel;
  • Remote shutter release;

  • Spare memory cards;

  • Extra batteries;

  • Backup storage for your photos.

Climate and clothing

When planning and choosing clothing, we need to consider strong winds (possibly storms) and frequent showers. Warm, waterproof clothing (rainjacket, rainpaints, rainhat) and good footwear (waterproof hikingboots and rubber boots) are essential. As is well known, you can experience three seasons in a single day. That’s what makes this trip so appealing to landscape photographers: exciting, threatening skies, exceptional light, and then suddenly mild weather.

Vaccinations

For the latest information on mandatory or recommended vaccinations, please visit the website of your goverment for travellers advice.

Pasport and Visa

Travelers from outside the UK need a valid passport and must apply for an electronic travel authorization (ETA).
