Did you know that the literal translation of Sri Lanka is “Resplendent Island”? The name couldn’t be more fitting. On this relatively small island, roughly the size of Ireland, you’ll find everything close together: magnificent nature filled with wildlife, ancient ruins, and idyllic beaches.

Few people realise that Sri Lanka is also a genuine safari destination. The island offers an exceptional variety of landscapes: open savannahs, rolling hills, rugged mountains, enchanting rainforests, and lush wetlands. Here live Asian elephants, sloth bears, deer, wild boar, crocodiles, water buffalo, mongooses and many colourful, often endemic, bird species. It even has the highest density of leopards in the world, making it one of the best places to photograph these elusive cats.

If you’re looking for an Asian safari destination that hasn’t been overrun by tourism but still offers everything you need for a successful photography experience, let Nature Talks take you to the enchanting island of Sri Lanka!

The Unique Island of Sri Lanka: The Hidden Safari Destination

For wildlife photographers, Sri Lanka may not be the first place that comes to mind, yet it is a true hidden gem. The island is home to numerous national parks brimming with life, and because it remains relatively unknown, most parks are still free from mass tourism.

We stay in comfortable lodges surrounded by nature and focus on just four carefully selected parks – each chosen for its outstanding photographic opportunities. This allows us to spend more time where it matters most: observing, waiting, and capturing the perfect image. Our programme includes both safaris and guided walks, offering the chance to photograph large mammals as well as smaller, more intimate subjects. In short, Sri Lanka is the perfect destination for photographers seeking an intimate and authentic wildlife experience.

The Five Best National Parks in Sri Lanka

We have carefully selected our destinations for this photography trip to Sri Lanka. There are only a few places in Asia that offer the unique combination of open grasslands, mature forests, picturesque wetlands, and a high density of animals. Due to the protected status of these natural areas, you will find an abundance of flora and fauna.

In these national parks, you’ll have the opportunity to photograph all the iconic animals that make a safari complete. Yala National Park is particularly renowned for its high density of leopards, but you will have a great chance to capture beautiful images of elephants, as well as sloth bears, crocodiles, deer, and wild boars. In total, Sri Lanka is home to over 44 species of mammals and more than 200 bird species, including 33 endemic species that are found only in Sri Lanka. Prepare for an unforgettable adventure as we explore the breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife of this stunning island!

1. Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park is one of the most beautiful and diverse parks in Sri Lanka. In addition to leopards, it is home to around 30 other mammal species, including elephants, sloth bears, sambar deer, water buffalo, and mongooses. The park also boasts a large variety of bird species, reptiles, and amphibians. Wilpattu is considered one of the best places in Sri Lanka to spot leopards in the wild. However, most tourists tend to visit Yala National Park instead, leaving Wilpattu much quieter. This makes it an excellent choice for our visit. The park was closed for a long time, and with an area of over 1,300 km², the exact leopard population is still unclear. Nonetheless, one or more leopards are regularly spotted, indicating a healthy population.

2. Wasgamuwa National Park

Wasgamuwa National Park is located slightly southeast of Dambulla. This national park is not heavily visited by tourists, which makes it a wonderfully tranquil location. It supports 23 species of mammals, including the wild Ceylon elephant, with approximately 150 individuals residing in the park. Besides these giants, wild buffalo, deer, leopards, and bears can also be found here. Near water sources, we will likely have the chance to photograph monitor lizards and crocodiles.

3. Gal Oya Park

Surrounding the Senanayake Samudraya reservoir, Gal Oya is a true paradise for nature photographers. It is famous for its swimming elephants, an extraordinary and unique spectacle. Exploring by boat allows us to capture wildlife from new and creative perspectives. Gal Oya is also home to a wealth of colourful birdlife, and the mixture of forest and water creates a beautiful setting for photography.

4. Sinharaja National Park

Deep in the southwest of Sri Lanka lies Sinharaja National Park, home to one of the country’s most spectacular rainforests. This paradise for nature lovers is marked by astonishing biodiversity and a rich flora and fauna that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. From colourful snakes and lizards to tropical birds, Sinharaja is a stunning place for wildlife photography. The park also features numerous waterfalls, perfect for swimming or simply admiring. These waterfalls are fantastic spots to cool off after a hike through the jungle.

These national parks offer a unique and incredible opportunity for wildlife photography and witnessing the breathtaking natural beauty of Sri Lanka’s diverse ecosystems!

Rest and Focus with a Limited Number of Accommodations

By visiting only four key locations, we keep the itinerary calm and focused, allowing more time to connect with each area and its wildlife. Our lodges are situated in tranquil natural surroundings, often with gardens full of birds and reptiles. Many overlook wetlands or rivers, and most have swimming pools for a refreshing dip after a day in the field.

With a small group of just eight participants, everyone receives personal attention. Our experienced local guides know exactly where to find the animals, and your English tour leader, professional wildlife photographer Marc Humphrey, will be by your side throughout the trip to provide guidance, inspiration and practical support. As the days unfold, you’ll notice your skills and confidence in photography growing steadily.

Capturing Stunning Images

We will be transported in open-top jeeps that are elevated at the back, with two passengers seated per row to ensure no one obstructs each other while photographing. Many organisations typically place three people per row, but we consciously avoid that arrangement. To allow everyone to photograph from different angles within the jeep, we will rotate seats frequently.

Based on sightings, we will travel to specific locations during this photography trip to Sri Lanka where we can find certain species. The diverse landscape comprises beautifully vegetated plains and forests, enhanced by the enchanting light filtering through the leaves, creating a truly magical atmosphere for photography.

Photography, Photography, and More Photography

During our photography trip to Sri Lanka, we will focus solely on the best locations and parks, allowing multiple visits to these areas. This approach minimises travel time and maximises our opportunities to photograph. By spending more time at each location, we allow ourselves to get to know the environment and its associated wildlife better. You’ll start to understand what to expect, enabling you to anticipate and capture even better images.

Our focus will be on creating beautiful photographs rather than merely recording as many species as possible. Are you ready to elevate your photography skills amidst the unique animals and majestic landscapes of the “Beautiful Island” Sri Lanka? Grab your camera and join us on this photography journey that will awaken your senses and reignite your passion for nature photography!

Outline Itinerary – Sri Lanka Photography Tour “The Resplendent Island”

Join us on an unforgettable 16-day photography journey across Sri Lanka — the “Resplendent Island”. This carefully designed itinerary combines wildlife, culture and comfort, taking you through four of the country’s most remarkable national parks: Wilpattu, Wasgamuwa, Gal Oya and Sinharaja. With varied landscapes, expert guidance and plenty of time in each location, you’ll have every opportunity to capture striking images of elephants, leopards, tropical birds and rainforest life.

The itinerary below provides a general overview of our journey. Once in Sri Lanka, we keep the schedule flexible so that we can adapt to local conditions and wildlife activity.

Day 1–2: Departure UK – Negombo
Your flight from the UK to Sri Lanka takes around 11 hours. Because Sri Lanka is 5.5 hours ahead of the UK in winter, we usually arrive in the morning. Upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, our local guide will meet us and drive us to a comfortable lodge near Wilpattu National Park. On the way, there is an opportunity to withdraw Sri Lankan rupees. After arrival, the rest of the day is free to relax and recover from the journey.

Day 3: Wilpattu National Park
We start the day gently to adjust to the time difference. After breakfast we explore the area around our lodge and photograph local wildlife and scenery. Following lunch, we set off on our first jeep safari in Wilpattu National Park. The park features a mix of forest and open grassland, home to elephants, deer, wild boar, monitor lizards, crocodiles and numerous bird species such as ibises, storks, herons and kingfishers. Dinner will be served at our lodge.

Day 4: Wilpattu National Park
Before breakfast we head out on an early morning jeep safari, taking breakfast in the park. Visiting the same park multiple times increases our chances of capturing great images and spotting elusive species such as the leopard and sloth bear. We will spend the whole day in the park.

Day 5: Wilpattu National Park
After a relaxed breakfast, we enjoy a short presentation on photographing in different weather and light conditions, followed by practical photography tips. After lunch we set off again for an afternoon safari in Wilpattu National Park.

Day 6: Wilpattu National Park
Early in the morning we embark on our final full-day safari in Wilpattu. Once again we spend the entire day in the park, taking time to observe and photograph its wildlife and landscapes.

Day 7: Wasgamuwa National Park
We depart early for Wasgamuwa National Park, another stunning, forest-rich area known for elephants and a variety of mammals, reptiles and birds. After checking in at our hotel, we explore the garden and surroundings, followed by an informal photo review session to inspire new ideas for the coming days.

Day 8–9: Wasgamuwa National Park
In the mornings we enjoy jeep safaris in Wasgamuwa National Park, where we again have a good chance of seeing elephants and leopards. Other possible encounters include the sloth bear, civet cat and a wide range of birdlife such as the painted stork and Brahminy kite. In the afternoon we take a gentle walk near the hotel to photograph the surrounding nature.

Day 10: Gal Oya National Park
After breakfast we travel to Gal Oya National Park. Upon arrival and check-in, lunch will be served. The rest of the day is at leisure — you may relax by the pool or photograph in the lodge garden.

Day 11: Gal Oya National Park
This morning we take a boat safari on the reservoir within Gal Oya National Park, famous for its elephants that swim between islands. We may also see monkeys, golden jackals, water buffalo, deer and wild boar. Birdlife is abundant, including many waterbirds, raptors and bee-eaters.

Day 12: Gal Oya National Park
We begin with a jeep safari in Gal Oya National Park, followed by lunch. In the afternoon we return to the lake in hopes of photographing the swimming elephants once more, along with other wildlife drawn to the water.

Day 13: Sinharaja Rainforest
After breakfast we travel south towards Sinharaja Rainforest. Once checked in and settled, there will be time to explore the hotel’s garden and nearby forest. Many endemic bird and reptile species can be found here — ideal for macro and bird photography.

Day 14: Sinharaja Rainforest
Guided by a local naturalist, we spend the day exploring Sinharaja Rainforest. We will focus on photographing its rich diversity of endemic birds, reptiles and plants, making the most of the soft filtered light under the jungle canopy.

Day 15: Negombo
After breakfast we drive back to a comfortable hotel near Negombo, close to the airport. The rest of the day is free to relax, review and edit your photos, or continue shooting in the hotel’s tropical garden.

Day 16: Negombo – UK
All good things come to an end. After breakfast we prepare for the return flight to the UK. Our driver will transfer us to Bandaranaike International Airport for our flight home.
