Polar Lights

Marco Gaiotti is Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Naval Architecture Engineering, but he’s also Ski trainer for professional skiers.  So he’s a jack of all trades. All those different skills are of course very useful for the extraordinary activities he performs to earn a living with.

He was born in Genoa in 1983. In 2007 he discovered, almost by chance, the wild environments of South Africa, and with that the passion for nature photography was born. Every year he explores the most extreme areas of our planet. In 2009 he spent a month in Alaska. He camped there in the wild and observed the untouched nature and spectacular landscapes. From this experience grows the desire to give the passion for nature photography a more professional tone.

In the fall of 2013, he takes part in an expedition to the Svalbard Islands and stays here a few days before the polar night. The results of this photographic adventure prove to be of the highest quality and subsequently appear in major international newspapers, including a full spread print in “The Guardian”.

In recent years, his style has become more oriented towards naturalistic photography. The photos are a powerful combination of flora and fauna, which makes them loaded with meaning: you simply doubt whether the subject is the animal or its environment.

Marco Giaotti has rightly won some major awards in the most important international wildlife photography competitions: The SONY WPA (Open Shortlist), Nature’s Best, Windland Smith Rice International Awards, Memorial Maria Luisa. Other awards have been received from Asferico, GDT European Photographer of the Year, Montphoto, Oasis, Glanzlichter, SIPA, Global Arctic Awards and Nature Photographer of the Year.

His inspiring talk is about photography in the high Arctic. In his presentation, he shows the arctic fauna during the change of seasons, when the polar lights are at their best. He also discusses climate change: sea ice that melts earlier in the season and recedes more and more every year. The periods without ice are therefore getting longer every year. Many animals depend on the pack ice for survival. This is therefore a serious threat to many arctic species.

Marco loves unspoiled natural landscapes. In his landscape he subtly gives way to different animal species such as polar bears, walruses, arctic foxes and seals. His photos are distinguished by the magical soft lights that illuminate the landscape. Or because of dramatic skies. Marco’s images are in any case a feast for the eyes.

As of January 1, 2020, Marco Gaiotti will also be involved in our photo tours as a tour guide.

My landscapes, personal reflections

In this inspiring lecture Michel Lucas looks back on ten years of landscape photography. He shows you precisely those specific images that are so important to him. Michel talks about his choice of (natural) landscapes, his focus on two specific nature reserves and his addiction to fog. On the way he introduces you to some “old friends”. “Friends” who keep returning to him to be captured.

He also discusses his sources of inspiration and tells how he came to his intimate and “whispering” images. Michel hopes that all of this will inspire you enough to make personal choices and to find more meaning and satisfaction in your photography.

One Life

His passion for Afrika began as a small boy. He was so in love with African animals that his parents just had to take him to Africa! It was the trip of his dreams already and he was just six-years-old. The next time was after university. He came back on an internship organised by the Italian embassy after university and one of the destinations they offered was Nairobi, so he decided to find out what it would be like living there after three months. So in 2000 he moved in and he just loved it, thought: this is the place! It was a total addiction, he couldn’t really get away from. So he decided to move there. He still didn’t have a place to stay and left everything behind. That’s how it started. He used to always drive himself, he never went with a guide, so he got to know the park really well because he was driving himself, finding the animals himself and following them day after day. His worries for the future of its wildlife began there too.

He’s the name behind the cover image of Remembering Elephants, and his first book, Light and Dust, has been published to wide acclaim. Airborne dust actually contributes to the quality of light in his opinon. It gives so much drama and cleans up the imige, cleans up the background. On many of his images you see animals running in dust, which is evocative of an Afrikan atmosphere: there’s light, there’s sun, there’s dust.

Join Federico Veronesi on a voyage of discovery through Africa. Explore the most beautiful places in Africa and its majestic animals with him. During this lecture he will follow his new book One Life. The book is built metaphorically around the cups and savannas of the Serengeti ecosystem.

A story and journey that takes you across the rivers and deserts of Amboseli and Namibia, to the enchanted forests of Mana Pools in Zimbabwe and Lake Nakuru in Kenya. With his beautiful photos he introduces the fascinating animals and their stories. During his inspiring lecture you will also have the opportunity to see more about his approach and photographic style.

ANIMOSITY: Documenting Human-Animal Conflict

Aaron Gekoski is an internationally acclaimed environmental photojournalist. He has an enormous appearance, almost that of a movie star! He documents conflicts between humans and animals in the most inhospitable places on earth. He is also a filmmaker. When we saw one of his documentaries on NatGeo Wild and later another on the Discovery Channel, we knew for sure: we want him absolutely at our festival! Aaron is currently busy producing and presenting a series of documentaries on the exotic pet trade and wildlife tourism.

Nature in our world is in crisis. Worldwide, animals are traded, hunted, poached, consumed and exploited to the point of extinction. Their shocking story is told through the lens and eyes of Aaron Gekoski. It showcases powerful and impressive photos and compelling stories from the conservation front line. These range from Cambodian dungeons to drown dogs, voodoo markets in West Africa to cruel wildlife tourism attractions and the shadowy world of the exotic pet trade. It promises to be an impressive lecture with sometimes intense images …
