Garth Lenz Nature & Landscape Photography Tour Guide
About Garth Lenz
Garth Lenz is a world-renowned fine art and landscape photographer, environmental photojournalist, speaker and workshop leader based on Canada’s west coast. With more than 30 years of experience in conservation photography, his work has been published in National Geographic, Time, GEO, Esquire, The Guardian and The New York Times. He has received numerous international awards, including Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and was named a Senior Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers in 2010.
What makes Garth’s work especially powerful is the purpose behind it. As he puts it: “I have never found anything more rewarding than photography, particularly images that can help to preserve threatened areas.” His photographs have helped support the protection of wild places and campaigns opposing damaging industrial activity.
Landscape Photography and Conservation Storytelling
Two themes run throughout Garth’s work: a love of wild landscapes and a commitment to conservation. From ancient forests to remote coastlines, he uses photography not only to create beautiful images but also to tell stories about the natural world and the challenges it faces. His acclaimed exhibition, The True Cost of Oil, brought international attention to the environmental impacts of fossil fuel extraction and its effects on wildlife, landscapes and Indigenous communities.
Garth’s Approach to Teaching Photography
Garth’s teaching style is thoughtful, personal and centred on the individual photographer. Rather than encouraging everyone to shoot in the same way, he helps each guest develop their own vision and photographic voice.
As Garth explains: “My teaching is based on helping the photographer better realize their personal vision. I try to understand what they want to achieve and try to understand their uniquely personal way of seeing the world and then help them to achieve that in their images.”
The Person Behind the Camera
For Garth, nature came first. Although there is a photograph of him as a toddler holding one of his father’s cameras, his fascination with the natural world began even earlier, and photography became a serious passion during his teenage years.
He remains especially drawn to forests and wild places with atmosphere and character. Some memories are dramatic — “I was charged by three bison many years ago. I won’t be forgetting that any time soon!” — while others are quieter: “The sound of raven calls in the coastal temperate rainforest of my home on B.C.’s west coast is an experience I always love.”
Why Travel With Garth?
Travelling with Garth is a chance to learn from one of the world’s leading conservation photographers. Drawing on more than three decades of experience, he teaches far more than camera technique. Whether your interest is fine art nature photography, landscape photography or conservation storytelling, Garth will help you see scenes differently, find stronger compositions and create images with meaning.
Guests gain a rare insight into how a National Geographic photographer approaches a landscape, works with light, identifies unique perspectives and builds photographs that tell a story. His goal is not to make you photograph like him, but to help you become a stronger and more creative photographer in your own right.
