7 Days | 25 October 2026 – 31 October 2026 (4 places left)
The Cairngorms National Park is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets for landscape photography. That’s why internationally award-winning fine art and conservation photographer Garth Lenz is leading this exclusive photo tour for Nature Talks.
Just an hour from Inverness, the Cairngorms is the largest national park in the UK and home to five of Scotland’s six highest mountains. Its dramatic landscapes range from granite peaks and ancient volcanic formations to glacial remnants left behind by the Ice Age. Most importantly, it contains the largest surviving areas of the ancient Caledonian Forest. It’s no surprise that National Geographic named the Cairngorms one of the world’s top 20 places to visit. Our November tour dates are perfectly timed to capture the park’s stunning autumn colours, with golden leaves, amber grasses and beautiful Highland light.
Are you a passionate landscape photographer who loves dramatic light, ancient forests and nature’s autumn colours? Then join Garth Lenz, National Geographic photographer, on this Nature Talks photography trip.

Cairngorms National Park offers intimate native woodland landscapes, lochs and lochans glowing with peak autumn colour, and a remarkable diversity of wildlife and landforms.
Unique to Scotland, the ancient Caledonian Forest once covered much of the country. These native pinewoods are a rich mix of Scots pine, juniper, birch, willow, yew, rowan and aspen, famed for their huge, twisted “granny” pines that can survive for centuries. The blend of deciduous and coniferous woodland, reflected in countless lochs and lochans and illuminated by autumn colour, creates extraordinary opportunities for expressive landscape photography.
These forests are home to red squirrels, Scottish wildcats, golden eagles, red deer and pine martens, alongside rarer species such as capercaillie and the Scottish crossbill. Reindeer, extinct in the UK for 8,000 years, were reintroduced to the Cairngorms in the early 1950s. Today, they form the UK’s only free-ranging herd, and we will have the opportunity to photograph these iconic animals in their natural Highland environment.
This is a rare opportunity to travel and photograph alongside internationally acclaimed, award-winning conservation photographer Garth Lenz. Throughout the tour, Garth will offer personal guidance, answer your questions, and provide valuable feedback on your photography — an exceptional addition to the experience.
A National Geographic photographer and Senior Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers — an organisation representing some of the world’s leading wildlife and conservation photographers — Garth is recognised globally for his fine art photography and powerful environmental storytelling. His work has appeared in many of the world’s most prestigious publications, and he brings a wealth of experience in both conservation and narrative photography.
He will guide you to his favourite photographic locations throughout the Cairngorms while helping you refine your creative vision and produce striking images of this remarkable landscape. Passionate about helping photographers grow creatively, Garth is dedicated to encouraging participants to push their photography to new levels.
This tour is particularly well suited to nature and landscape photographers with some experience who are looking to further develop and strengthen their work.

In late October and November, the Cairngorms National Park is transformed by the rich colours of autumn. Golden birch woodland, mirror-like lochs and lochans create a landscape of exceptional beauty. Finely sculpted mist often envelops still waters, while ancient Scots pines — some standing for over three centuries — rise like sentinels against glowing autumn sunsets. At this time of year, light and atmosphere combine to produce conditions unique within the UK. It is not unusual for the higher peaks to carry an early dusting of snow, adding further drama to the scene.
Our main photographic focus will be the ancient Caledonian Forest, one of Europe’s largest remaining native forests and one of Scotland’s most important habitats for biodiversity. This remarkable woodland of Scots pine, birch, rowan, yew, willow, aspen and juniper offers endless opportunities for creative photography, from sweeping forest landscapes to intimate details and abstract studies in colour, texture and light.
Whether you are drawn to dramatic vistas, quiet woodland moments or reflections of autumn colour in still Highland waters, inspiration can be found around every corner in this extraordinary wilderness.

This itinerary is intentionally flexible to accommodate changing weather conditions and the creative flow of the group. The emphasis is on making the most of Scotland’s dramatic and varied Highland landscapes, which means daily plans will be adapted on location.
Day 1: Meeting in Inverness & Transfer to Glenfeshie
We meet in Inverness, where the group will come together before driving by minibus for approximately one hour into the Cairngorms National Park.
The journey takes us deep into the Highlands, arriving at our comfortable lodge in Glenfeshie, our base for the workshop.
After settling in, we will enjoy a welcome dinner and an informal group introduction.
We will also receive an inspiring presentation on the local area from resident photographer and environmental leader Peter Cairns, setting the tone for the week ahead.
Depending on arrival time and conditions, there may be an opportunity for a short introductory shoot in the immediate surroundings of the lodge.
Days 2–6: Immersive Photography in the Cairngorms
There is no fixed daily schedule, allowing us to respond fully to weather, light, and the creative interests of the group to ensure the best possible photographic opportunities.
Each day we will explore a variety of Highland landscapes, focusing on both iconic scenery and more intimate, creative interpretations of the environment.
Our photographic approach includes:
• Working with light, composition, and visual storytelling
• Exploring patterns, shapes, textures, and abstraction in the landscape
• Using creative in-camera techniques and filters
• Capturing atmosphere, mood, and emotional impact
• Developing a coherent body of work that tells the story of the CairngormsGarth will provide individual guidance throughout the workshop, offering support, feedback, and creative suggestions in the field.
From our base in Glenfeshie, we have immediate access to ancient Caledonian pine forest, hidden glens with seasonal colour, wide moorlands, and tranquil lochs and lochans. The programme runs from dawn until dusk to maximise the best light of the day.
Evening Routine: Review, Learning & Planning
Each evening we return to the lodge to review the day’s photography and prepare for the next day’s shooting.
Evening sessions typically include:
• Image review and group discussion
• Sharing experiences from the field
• Creative feedback and post-processing insights
• Planning and adapting the next day’s locationsThe lodge provides a comfortable and welcoming base in the heart of the Cairngorms, with flexible meal times designed around sunrise and sunset sessions.
Day 7: Return to Inverness & Departure
After breakfast, we travel by minibus back to Inverness, where the workshop concludes.
You will depart with a portfolio of new images, improved creative skills, and lasting inspiration from a week spent immersed in the Scottish Highlands.
This trip can be booked starting from £2,398 based on shared accommodation.

Accommodation
During this photography trip, we stay in a cozy lodge on the edge of Ballintean. The rooms are equipped with their own bathroom and toilet.
Fitness Level
Most sites are accessible via a short walk requiring only a reasonable level of fitness. You should be able to walk up to 1 km over uneven ground. The rough terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions can feel challenging at times. It is possible to experience three seasons in one day.
Outbound and Return Travel
You will need to purchase a return flight ticket to Inverness for this trip. This is not included in the tour price.
Once the minimum number of participants is confirmed, we will send you an email with flight recommendations. If you prefer, we can also book the tickets for you — please let us know.
Transport and Flights
On-site transport:
Transport during the trip will be by minibus or passenger cars.
Checked and Hand Luggage:
Checked luggage on flights is usually limited to 23 kg per person. Your photography equipment (excluding your tripod, which should be checked in as hold luggage) should be carried as hand luggage.
Airlines also have restrictions on the size and weight of hand luggage — please check your airline’s website for details. In addition to your camera backpack, a small shoulder bag or laptop bag is usually permitted. However, it is best to store your laptop in your camera backpack if there is room.
You can carry extra weight on your person — for example, by wearing a camera around your neck or using a photo vest or jacket with strong pockets.
Soft Bags or Suitcases:
To make travel easier — both on the flight and during photography outings on the islands — it’s important to keep your luggage to a minimum. Soft bags or flexible suitcases are preferable, as they are easier to stack and transport.
Equipment and Materials
For this trip, we recommend bringing lenses suitable for landscape photography — wide-angle, standard, and short telephoto zoom (roughly between 16 mm and 200 mm). Depending on your interests and specialisation, a longer telephoto zoom may also be useful for wildlife photography. Additionally, please bring:
A sturdy tripod (important due to possible windy conditions);
Filters (polarising, neutral density, graduated ND, and Big and/or Little Stopper);
Remote shutter release;
Spare memory cards;
Extra batteries;
Backup storage for your photos.
Climate and clothing
When planning and choosing clothing, we need to consider strong winds (possibly storms) and frequent showers. Warm, waterproof clothing (rainjacket, rainpaints, rainhat) and good footwear (waterproof hikingboots and rubber boots) are essential. As is well known, you can experience three seasons in a single day. That’s what makes this trip so appealing to landscape photographers: exciting, threatening skies, exceptional light, and then suddenly mild weather.
Vaccinations
For the latest information on mandatory or recommended vaccinations, please visit the website of your goverment for travellers advice.
Pasport and Visa
Travelers from outside the UK need a valid passport and must apply for an electronic travel authorization (ETA).
BOOK YOUR PHOTO TOUR
You’re not yet sure if you can join a specific photography trip on a specific date because you may need to discuss it first at home, with your work, or with your travel companion. In that case, you can request a non-binding option for the trip via our website, by email, or by phone.
Nature Talks will reserve a spot for you during this period, as long as there is still availability for the trip. If, during this time, the trip becomes fully booked due to other participants, we will contact you to discuss whether you would like to convert your option into a confirmed booking. Once the option expires, and if you have not informed Nature Talks that you wish to use it, no rights can be derived from the option.
If we need to cancel the trip due to a new Covid variant for example, you will always receive your money back within two working days. As a consumer, you are legally entitled to a refund in such a case (minus 30 pound administration costs)
