Vancouver Island Photography Tour – Landscapes, Indigenous Culture, Wildlife

Big Trees, Crashing Waves, Bears & so Much More

Canada’s Wild Pacific Coast – Ancient Rainforests, Coastal Scenes, Marine Wildlife and Indigenous Culture

11 days | 11 September–21 September 2026 (4 places left)

On the west coast of Vancouver Island, ancient rainforest meets the open Pacific. Giant cedars and spruce rise above wild beaches and rocky headlands, while whales, sea otters and black bears inhabit the coast. Rich in Indigenous culture and important conservation history, Clayoquot Sound, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is far more than a beautiful landscape.

This trip explores the wider story of Clayoquot Sound. Landscape photography forms the heart of the programme, from old-growth rainforest and sweeping seascapes to shifting light and quiet shoreline details. Wildlife encounters and Indigenous cultural experiences will add layers to the story, revealing how the land, wildlife and people are closely connected. Rather than collecting unrelated images, you will learn to create a coherent photo story capturing the character and significance of this remarkable place.

Your guide, Garth Lenz, is an internationally acclaimed National Geographic conservation and fine-art photographer who has photographed Clayoquot Sound for more than 30 years. Drawing on his intimate knowledge of the region, he will help refine your style and create images that tell a meaningful story.

Join Nature Talks and Garth Lenz on an unforgettable photographic journey through the Pacific Coast’s dramatic landscapes, remarkable wildlife and rich culture.

Why Visit in September?

September is one of the best times to photograph the west coast of Vancouver Island. Morning mist often settles among the trees, the light begins to soften as autumn approaches, and changing weather creates the dramatic atmosphere that makes the west coast so inspiring to photograph.

This workshop is for photographers who enjoy taking time to understand a place. Instead of moving quickly between viewpoints, we spend time understanding the landscape before pressing the shutter. Rather than simply visiting a series of viewpoints, we will immerse ourselves in the relationships between forest, ocean, conservation and culture while developing photographs that communicate something of the spirit of this remarkable place.

Photography Locations in Clayoquot Sound, Vancouver Island

From wild Pacific beaches and ancient rainforest to Indigenous cultural settings and rich marine wildlife, this photography workshop reveals the many faces of Clayoquot Sound. Each field session will help you create images that respond to the changing character of the landscape while contributing to a compelling photographic story of Vancouver Island’s west coast.

Pacific Coast Landscape Photography in Clayoquot Sound

The coastline around Tofino and Ucluelet offers outstanding landscape photography, with long sandy beaches, rugged headlands, tidal pools and windswept forest transformed by shifting Pacific light, weather, tides and surf.

We work in a carefully chosen selection of locations which may include Chesterman Beach, Long Beach, Wickaninnish Beach, Radar Hill, the Wild Pacific Trail, Grice Bay and Tonquin Trail. Some sessions will capture dramatic surf, storm light and sweeping views; others will explore reflections, textures and quieter details. As they say on the west coast, if you do not like the weather, wait a minute. With conditions changing quickly, the same viewpoint can produce different compositions, colours and moods throughout the week. Returning to selected locations in different conditions will help you move beyond the obvious and create stronger, more personal photographs.

Ancient Rainforest in the Pacific Northwest – Pacific Rim National Park

Clayoquot Sound’s ancient temperate rainforest is one of the Pacific Northwest’s greatest photographic subjects. Towering western red cedars and Sitka spruce rise above a forest floor covered in moss and ferns. After rain, the greens deepen, the forest glistens and soft light filters through the canopy, creating ideal conditions for photography.

During the workshop, you will learn to capture both the scale and the quieter details of these old-growth forests, from towering trees and layered woodland scenes to patterns, textures and subtle light. The rainforest trails and coastal ecosystems of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve provide outstanding opportunities to photograph the character of this remarkable environment.

Photographing Whales, Eagles and Bears on the Coast

Although this workshop focuses mainly on landscape and culture, the marine wildlife of Clayoquot Sound adds an exciting extra dimension. Its coastal waters are rich in life and offer excellent opportunities for photographing wildlife.

During the workshop, we will make two marine excursions into Clayoquot Sound and the outer Pacific, planned around weather, sea conditions and availability. Depending on conditions, we may encounter black bears along the shoreline, orcas, grey whales, humpback whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, bald eagles and seabirds. Wildlife can never be guaranteed, but these outings give us a strong chance to experience and photograph the rich biodiversity of this wild coast.

Indigenous Culture, Conservation and Meares Island

Clayoquot Sound is not only a place of great natural beauty but also one of Canada’s most important cultural and conservation landscapes. A visit to Meares Island Tribal Park reveals the deep connection between land, people and protection.

Meares Island is where the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation led one of Canada’s first major Indigenous-led campaigns against industrial logging. It is also home to some of the region’s largest and oldest trees, with giants estimated to be up to 2,000 years old. This visit adds real depth to the workshop, enriching your pictures with story, meaning and a stronger sense of place. Where possible, we will also learn from members of the local Nuu-chah-nulth community through cultural interpretation and conversations about their relationship with land and sea.

Short Travel Distances on Location

Itinerary – Photography Tour of Vancouver’s Landscapes, Indigenous Culture and Wildlife

Please note: Below you will find an outline of how the photography tour may look. The daily schedule and locations we visit will be adapted each day based on weather, light, tides, wildlife activity, cultural scheduling, and the interests of the group. Each evening, we will discuss and plan the following day’s itinerary to ensure we take advantage of the best photographic opportunities.

Day 1: Arrival In Vancouver

Participants arrive in Vancouver, usually in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on flight schedules. After checking into our accommodation, we will enjoy a relaxed welcome dinner. This will be an opportunity to meet fellow participants, discuss photographic interests, and introduce the landscapes, culture, and conservation story of Clayoquot Sound.

Garth will outline the plans for the week and discuss how we will adapt our schedule to changing conditions.

Day 2: Journey Across Vancouver Island to Clayoquot Sound

Today we take the ferry to Nanaimo and travel across Vancouver Island to our base, an ecolodge near Tofino. The journey itself offers a rich introduction to the landscapes of Vancouver Island, with excellent photographic opportunities along the way. As forests, mountains, lakes, and coastal scenery unfold around us, we will make selected stops whenever light, weather, and timing come together.

We may stop at Cathedral Grove to photograph towering old-growth trees or at Kennedy Lake for reflections and layered landscapes, depending on the light, weather and timing.

Throughout the journey, Garth will help you work with natural light, simplify complex scenes and decide when a landscape suits a sweeping composition or a more intimate approach.

After arriving at the EcoLodge in the afternoon, we will check in and take a short break before heading to a nearby beach or coastal viewpoint for our first sunset photography session. Sweeping shorelines, rock formations, tidal details and shifting Pacific light provide a striking introduction to Clayoquot Sound. Depending on conditions, we may photograph colourful skies, reflections in wet sand, moving water or the meeting of forest, beach and ocean, with Garth helping you turn the atmosphere of the coast into strong, expressive images.

Days 3 to 9: The Many Faces of the Clayoquot Sound Photography Experience

Over the week, we’ll explore the distinct landscapes, wildlife, and cultural stories that make Clayoquot Sound a photographer’s paradise. With Garth Lenz offering hands-on field guidance, each location brings its own unique atmosphere, subjects, and technical opportunities.

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

A striking mix of ancient coastal forest, wild shoreline, and open Pacific views. Photograph dramatic beaches, wave dynamics, tidal patterns, and ocean weather rolling in. Garth will help you simplify complex scenes, read shifting light, and master both sweeping landscapes and quiet, detail-driven compositions.

Ancient Rainforest Locations

Step into a moody world dominated by massive Sitka spruce, towering cedars, mossy canopy, ferns, and soft, filtered light. This setting is ideal for atmospheric wide shots and intimate texture studies. Learn to navigate low light, manage busy forest compositions, and capture the quiet scale of old-growth ecosystems.

Dramatic Pacific Beaches and Coastal Viewpoints

Built for photographers drawn to scale, weather, and raw movement. Sweeping sands, sea stacks, tidal pools, heavy surf, and coastal fog offer constant variety. Focus on long exposures, dynamic wave action, or subtle foreground reflections with Garth’s guidance on timing, balance, and depth.

Ucluelet and the Wild Pacific Trail

A rugged, high-contrast landscape where wind-sculpted trees cling to rocky cliffs above crashing ocean waves. It’s an ideal spot to push your visual flow and composition where land meets sea. Garth will push you beyond standard postcard shots to capture the coastline’s true power and grit.

Grice Bay and Quieter Estuary Landscapes

A tranquil contrast to the outer coast. Mudflats, tidal channels, soft reflections, and subtle horizon layers invite a slower, more meditative approach to photography. Work on minimal compositions, tonal balance, and delicate details in soft light.

Meares Island Tribal Park and Its Conservation History

Home to colossal ancient trees and boardwalk trails steeped in deep cultural and environmental significance. Beyond photographing the jaw-dropping old-growth forest, you’ll learn about the historic blockades and ongoing Indigenous stewardship that saved it. Garth’s long connection to this land adds deep context to your images.

Indigenous Cultural Experiences Where Available

When possible, we’ll connect with local Indigenous artists, carvers, or cultural guides to learn about traditional connections to land and sea. Garth will show you how to respectfully approach environmental portraiture, detail shots, and visual storytelling that honours the region’s heritage.

Two Marine Wildlife Excursions

We’ll head out on two dedicated boat trips into the sound and outer Pacific. One outing focuses on searching for black bears foraging along the rocky coast; the other targets whale spotting—including migrating whales and resident orcas. Keep your lenses ready: sea otters, sea lions, seals, bald eagles, and seabirds are frequent companions on both routes. Garth will coach you on fast shutter management, anticipating animal behaviour, and shooting from a moving deck.

Personal Project Development and Image Reviews

Move beyond a collection of random snapshots and build a cohesive visual narrative. Whether you choose to focus on old-growth conservation, coastal energy, or quiet textures, regular group feedback and editing sessions with Garth will help you refine your portfolio, sharpen your narrative voice, and polish your final edits.

  • Daily Pace: Field days alternate between dynamic coastal shoots, slow forest walks, and quiet estuary explorations based on weather and light.
  • Evenings: Group image reviews, creative discussions, editing workshops, and brief planning sessions for the next day’s outing.

Days 10-11 — Departure

After a final breakfast on Vancouver Island, we begin our journey back across the island. Depending on timings and the ferry schedule, we may make a few final photography stops along the way before returning to Vancouver for our final night. If time allows, there will also be an opportunity to explore the city. The return flight you book will likely depart the following day, meaning you will probably arrive back in the UK on 22 September.

You’ll head home with more than just a camera full of memorable images—you’ll leave with a deeper connection to one of the planet’s great temperate rainforests, and a richer understanding of the natural, cultural, and conservation stories that make Clayoquot Sound so extraordinary.

Practical Information for Your Vancouver Island Photography Tour

Participants Meeting

Prior to departure, we will host an online participants’ meeting. This is an opportunity to meet your fellow travellers and your tour leader, as well as to ask any questions ahead of the journey.

Accommodation

During this Photography holiday, we will stay at an eco-lodge set directly within the rainforest of Clayoquot Sound near Tofino. This special location is more than just a comfortable place to sleep—the property also hosts the Carving on the Edge Festival and serves as a gathering place for artists, educators, and members of the local Nuu-chah-nulth community.

The lodge provides a peaceful base with pleasant common areas for image reviews, discussions, and daily planning sessions. Its convenient location allows us to adapt quickly to changing light, weather, tides, and surf without wasting time on long drives.

Difficulty

Most photography locations are accessible via relatively short walks across beaches, forest trails, boardwalks, and coastal viewpoints. Expect uneven terrain, sand, tree roots, mud, and occasionally wet conditions.

This workshop is suitable for photographers with reasonable mobility.

Outward and Return Journey

The tour begins and ends at Vancouver International airport. International flights are not included.

Local Transportation

Local transportation is provided by a large car or minibus. Boats operated by experienced captains are chartered for the marine wildlife safaris.

If necessary, smaller items such as lenses, camera bodies and spare batteries may be carried in the pockets of a large coat or photography vest, as these are not typically weighed. Please note that adherence to baggage regulations remains your own responsibility.

To make travel easier, both on the flight and during photography outings on the islands, it’s important to keep your luggage to a minimum. Soft bags or flexible suitcases are preferable, as they are easier to stack and transport.

Climate and Clothing

In September, weather on the west coast of Vancouver Island is mild to cool, windy, and rainy. Expect temperatures between 12°C and 18°C, with frequent rain showers as autumn sets in.

  • Dressing strategy: Wear layers so you can easily adjust to temperature changes.
  • Essentials: High-quality rain gear and sturdy hiking boots.
  • Recommended: If you have space in your luggage, consider bringing rubber boots (wellingtons) for photo sessions at the water’s edge.
