Wildlife Photography Tour to Zimanga, South Africa

World Class Wildlife Photography Hides and Luxury Accommodation

Zimanga Wildlife Photography Tour: Safari Drives, Photography Hides, Night Photography

10 Days | 14 November 2026 – 23 November 2026 (fully booked)
10 Days | 20 October 2027 – 29 October 2027 (five places left)

Set in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Zimanga Private Game Reserve is one of Africa’s premier destinations for wildlife photography. Home to the Big Five as well as giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, cheetah, serval, jackal, bee-eaters and even the rare pink-throated twinspot birds, the reserve offers an incredible diversity of wildlife. This wildlife photography trip is intentionally limited to a small group of just seven guests, allowing for more intimate wildlife encounters, less disturbance around animals, and far more personalised 1:1 photography tuition throughout the journey.

What truly sets Zimanga apart, however, are its world-class photographic hides purpose-built to create unique, close-up wildlife encounters and highly creative photographic opportunities. Over the course of the photography trip, we’ll photograph from a range of hides by both day and night, alongside expert wildlife photography guide Benjamin Smail, and local trackers who know the reserve intimately.

*Exciting update* – As of May 2026, African wild dogs have returned to Zimanga and the reserve is currently home to two leopard cubs and four young lions. There are high chances they will still be around during our November 2026 tour!

If this sounds like your kind of wildlife photography adventure, join Nature Talks in South Africa.

Zimanga: The Paradise for Every Wildlife Photographer

Zimanga is the first game reserve that caters to both safari enthusiasts and the needs of modern wildlife photographers, both professional and amateur. In their quest for greater appreciation of nature and exclusive experiences, they now offer a range of photographic opportunities that are unmatched anywhere else. In Zimanga, the combination of jeep safaris, luxurious and innovative photographic hides and accommodation in luxury lodges provides the best wildlife encounters and the most unique photographic opportunities on the entire African continent.

Covering nearly 70 square kilometres of unspoiled bushveld, rolling hills, riverine forest and the winding Mkuze River, Zimanga Private Game Reserve provides stunning natural backdrops for wildlife photography. The variety of habitats supports an exceptional diversity of mammals, reptiles and birdlife, making every drive and hide session full of photographic potential.

World-Class Photography Hides Designed by Bence Maté

Multi-award-winning wildlife photographer Bence Máté is internationally renowned not only for his nature photography, but also for designing some of the most innovative wildlife photography hides in the world. In collaboration with Zimanga, he has created a network of extraordinary hides that allow photographers to capture intimate wildlife images without disturbing the animals.

Every hide is carefully designed around animal behaviour, natural light, reflections, wind direction and the surrounding environment. The result is an experience that combines exceptional photographic opportunities with outstanding comfort. Many hides feature professional tripod setups, movable chairs on rails and even air conditioning.

Throughout the trip, we’ll use a variety of hides tailored to different subjects, from colourful kingfishers and bee-eaters to crocodiles, rhino and birds of prey.

One of the highlights is spending two nights in specialised waterhole hides, where buffalo, rhino, elephant, lion and even leopard may approach just metres away after dark. Carefully controlled artificial lighting creates dramatic reflections and unique night-time images unlike anywhere else in Africa.

Safari Game Drives in Zimanga

We alternate between photography from Zimanga’s superb photographic hides and exploring the reserve on expertly guided game drives in a 4-passenger safari vehicle. As Zimanga Private Game Reserve is home to an exceptional diversity of mammals, reptiles and birds, there are great opportunities to photograph wildlife in a wide variety of habitats and situations. Our guide and driver remain in radio contact with other vehicles in the reserve, sharing up-to-date information on sightings and animal movements. Under certain conditions, the driver is allowed to go off-road and follow the animals to provide the most favourable conditions for photography.

Why Visit in October/November?

Our dates have been carefully chosen to coincide with the transition between the dry winter and the beginning of the wet season, one of the best times for wildlife photography in Zimanga.

At this time of year, animals still rely heavily on waterholes, making activity around the hides especially productive. At the same time, the first rains begin transforming the landscape from dry yellow tones into fresh greens, creating more vibrant photographic backgrounds. October also brings an increase in migratory birdlife, adding even more variety to the experience.

Zimanga has also shared some very encouraging recent predator news. As of May 2026, African wild dogs have been seen spending time around the hides, and there are currently two leopard cubs and four young lions in the reserve. Later in the season, these cubs are likely still to be with their mothers, which means there is a very good chance of encountering and photographing them during the trip.

What Will the Week Look Like?

Throughout the week we stay together as a Nature Talks group, splitting into smaller groups only during hide sessions and safari drives to maximise space and comfort.

Each day alternates between hide photography and safari exploration, giving a great mix of experiences and subjects. Every participant will also have the opportunity to photograph from two different night hides overlooking illuminated waterholes, where wildlife can approach within just a few metres. The carefully designed lighting creates beautiful reflections and dramatic night-time scenes without the need for flash photography, offering many different creative compositions.

Photographic Hides at Zimanga Wildlife Photography Holiday

Zimanga Private Game Reserve is world-renowned for its exceptional photographic hides, widely regarded as some of the finest anywhere in Africa for wildlife photography. Designed to give photographers intimate, eye-level encounters with birds and mammals, these hides combine luxury, innovation and outstanding photographic potential in one unforgettable wildlife photography holiday experience.

Wildlife Photography Hides at Zimanga Designed by Bence Máté

Few names in wildlife photography are as respected as Bence Máté. The award-winning Hungarian photographer has received some of the industry’s highest honours, including top recognition in Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Nature Photographer of the Year, Bird Photographer of the Year and European Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

Beyond his own photography, Bence is internationally renowned for transforming the design of wildlife photography hides. By combining a deep understanding of animal behaviour, light, reflections and composition, he has created some of the most innovative hides in the world, from Hungary and Costa Rica to Zimanga Private Game Reserve in South Africa.

At Zimanga, his hides allow photographers to capture extraordinary close-range wildlife images whilst remaining completely concealed from the animals, creating exceptional opportunities for both bird and wildlife photography.

World-Class Wildlife Photography Hides at Zimanga

Set within 7,000 hectares of private wilderness, Zimanga’s hides are considered among the finest wildlife photography hides anywhere in the world. Designed specifically with photographers in mind, they combine comfort, luxury and cutting-edge design to create remarkable photographic opportunities.

From eye-level water reflections and dramatic backlighting to intimate encounters with birds, predators and large mammals, each hide offers a completely different experience. Together, they form one of the most impressive hide photography collections available on any wildlife photography holiday in Africa.

Mkhombe Hide: Bird Photography and Reflection Photography at Zimanga

Zimanga’s original birdbath hide is a paradise for bird photographers. Perfectly positioned for beautiful morning light, it allows eye-level photography as birds bathe and drink only a few metres away.

More than 80 species have been recorded here, creating endless opportunities for colourful, lively and beautifully intimate bird images. For anyone interested in bird photography in South Africa, this is one of Zimanga’s true highlights.

Bhejane Hide: Pink-Throated Twinspot and Forest Bird Photography

Carefully positioned within dense habitat, this hide is designed for shy forest birds and other elusive species. Its most sought-after subject is the rare pink-throated twinspot, one of South Africa’s most desirable birds for visiting photographers.

With particularly attractive afternoon light, Bhejane Hide offers a more atmospheric and intimate style of bird photography, rewarding patience with unusual and highly special encounters of rare and shy species.

Zimanga Lagoon Hide: Waterbird, Crocodile and Reflection Photography

Built on a natural peninsula extending into Hlambanyathi Dam, the Lagoon Hide offers superb opportunities for photographing waterbirds in changing light conditions throughout the day. Species you may see here include African Jacana, Saddle-billed Stork, Goliath Heron, Grey Heron, African Fish Eagle, Malachite Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, Yellow-billed Stork, African Spoonbill, various duck species, crocodiles, and occasionally elephants coming to drink.

Whether you are working in soft sunrise light, dramatic sunset conditions or strong backlighting for silhouettes and reflections, this hide offers exceptional creative flexibility. It is ideal for photographers who want elegant waterbird images with a strong sense of place.

Umgodi Overnight Hide: Night Wildlife Photography at Zimanga

One of Zimanga’s most famous hides, Umgodi offers a truly unique overnight wildlife photography experience. Built directly into a waterhole, it allows photographers to work from just centimetres above the water surface as wildlife approaches to drink only metres away.

Buffalo, rhino, elephant, lion and leopard have all been photographed here under carefully controlled lighting, creating unique eye-level photos with stunning reflections and dramatic night-time images. The hide is also equipped for comfort, with seating, bunk beds, air conditioning and kitchen facilities for the overnight stay.

Bee-Eater Hide: Action Bird Photography at Zimanga

Designed specifically for photographing white-throated bee-eaters, this mobile hide places you directly beside an active nesting colony. The constant movement, bright colours and aerial interaction make it one of the most exciting hides for action photography.

For photographers who enjoy flight shots, behaviour and fast-paced bird photography, this hide offers tremendous energy and variety.

Scavenger’s Hill Hide: Raptor and Vulture Photography in South Africa

Overlooking the Doornhoek Valley, this hide attracts a remarkable range of scavengers and birds of prey. Several vulture species, bateleurs, eagles, storks and jackals are regularly seen here, creating dramatic opportunities for behavioural photography and flight images.

Beyond its photographic appeal, the hide also plays an important conservation role. By providing a safe feeding area within the protected reserve, it helps keep vulnerable scavenger species, particularly vultures, away from surrounding areas where poisoning remains a serious threat.

Tamboti Overnight Hide: Luxury Waterhole Wildlife Photography

Located near a natural clearing beneath towering Tamboti trees, Tamboti Hide offers another unforgettable overnight experience. Larger and more spacious than Umgodi, it combines luxurious comfort with exceptional wildlife photography opportunities.

Wildlife visits the waterhole throughout the night, allowing photographers to capture intimate encounters from a beautifully positioned eye-level perspective. It is an ideal setting for dramatic and highly memorable night photography.

Tower Hide: Canopy Bird Photography in Zimanga’s Fever Tree Forest

Rising eight metres above the ground in Zimanga’s fever tree forest, the Tower Hide is designed for photographing canopy-dwelling birds and other treetop wildlife.

Patience is often rewarded here with perspectives and photographic opportunities that are rarely possible from ground level. It adds yet another unique dimension to the Zimanga wildlife photography holiday experience.
