Combining technical expertise with a strong emphasis on creativity and personal expression, he brings a unique perspective to photographing Skye’s dramatic landscapes.
October is one of the finest months to photograph the Isle of Skye. The summer crowds have largely disappeared, leaving many of the island’s most famous locations quieter and more enjoyable to photograph. Shorter days mean more time working in the soft, low-angle light of sunrise and sunset, while autumn weather brings a mix of dramatic skies, stormy seas, passing showers and clear conditions that can create spectacular photographic opportunities. From atmospheric mountain vistas to rugged coastlines and waterfalls, October offers the perfect balance of light, mood and variety for landscape photographers.

From our base near Portree, we have easy access to the Isle of Skye’s most iconic photography locations. Throughout this landscape photography tour, we will photograph legendary locations including the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, Neist Point, Talisker Bay, the Fairy Pools, Elgol and Torrin. Together, these locations offer an extraordinary variety of subjects, from dramatic mountain vistas and rugged coastlines to waterfalls, sea cliffs and intimate landscape details.
Beyond Skye’s famous landmarks, we will also seek out quieter locations, hidden lochans and creative compositions that encourage personal expression and help you develop your own photographic style. We will also explore elements of Skye’s rich history, including ancient ruins and castles such as Eilean Donan, one of Scotland’s most photographed and recognisable landmarks.
By combining iconic locations, expert tuition and a flexible itinerary built around the best light and weather conditions, this Isle of Skye photography tour offers the perfect opportunity to create a diverse and memorable portfolio while improving your landscape photography skills.

This Isle of Skye photography tour is suitable for photographers of all abilities who want plenty of time in the field, expert guidance and access to some of Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes.
With a flexible itinerary, we can make the most of the light, weather and tides, returning to key locations when conditions are at their best. You’ll benefit from personal guidance from Garth Lenz, along with practical support with composition, filters, long-exposure photography and image development. This tour emphasises not only technique but also vision, creativity and narrative.
If you want to strengthen your landscape photography while working in one of the most inspiring locations in Scotland, this tour is for you.

This itinerary is intentionally flexible to accommodate changing weather conditions, tides, and the creative flow of the group. The emphasis is on making the most of Skye’s dramatic and ever-changing light, which means daily plans will be adapted on location.
Day 1: Arrival and Welcome
We will meet at Inverness Airport round midday, from where we will travel by minibus to our accommodation on Skye.
It’s a beautiful three-hour drive through a wild and fairy-like landscape of open moorlands, scattered lochans, and rocky hills. We will pass the famous Loch Ness and, if time allows, make a photo stop at Eilean Donan Castle before continuing on to the Isle of Skye.
We will arrive and settle into our cosy accommodation near Portree, centrally located to give us flexible access to all areas of this beautiful island.
In the evening, we’ll gather for a welcome meeting and dinner, get to know one another, and share our individual goals for the week.
Garth will introduce the key photographic themes of the workshop and give an overview of the locations we may explore.
Days 2–6: Daily Photographic Exploration
Each day we’ll plan our outings in response to light, weather, tides, and the interests of the group, allowing us to work in the best possible conditions at each location.
Our days will typically begin with early morning shoots to capture first light, and we’ll also take full advantage of late afternoon and evening conditions for golden hour and sunset photography.
Locations we may explore include:
The Old Man of Storr
Towering basalt pinnacles rise dramatically from the Trotternish Ridge, offering striking compositions in morning mist or under dramatic skies. This location is ideal for both wide-angle and long lens work.
The Quiraing
A surreal, landslip-sculpted landscape of cliffs, peaks, and winding roads, perfect for storytelling compositions that capture Skye’s mythic atmosphere.
Neist Point
One of Skye’s most iconic coastal scenes, with a steep headland leading to a lone lighthouse perched above crashing waves. It is especially powerful at sunset and during stormy conditions.
Talisker Bay
A secluded beach with black sand, sea stacks, and a waterfall plunging down the cliffs, making it a perfect location for long exposures and minimalist seascapes.
Elgol
A rugged shoreline facing the Cuillin Mountains across Loch Scavaig, with incredible potential for moody foregrounds, reflections, and painterly compositions in early or late light.
The Fairy Pools
A series of crystal-clear pools and cascading waterfalls set against the dramatic backdrop of the Black Cuillin, ideal for slower shutter speeds and detailed landscape studies.
The Fairy Glen
A whimsical landscape of grassy mounds, miniature hills, and winding paths near Uig, offering endless opportunities for creative compositions and visual storytelling shaped by thousands of years of geological evolution.
Torrin
A quiet and scenic area nestled between the Red Cuillin and Loch Slapin, where sweeping views, reflective water, and a calm atmosphere invite thoughtful, expressive photography.
Hidden lochans and abstract details
Throughout the week, we’ll also explore smaller lochs, textured moorlands, and abstract details, all of which are perfect for developing your personal style and visual voice.
Day 7: Final Morning and Departure
After a final group breakfast, and depending on weather and flight times, we may make one last photo stop at Eilean Donan Castle during our transfer back to the airport for return flights home.
When you return home, you’ll carry not only a hard drive full of memorable images and wonderful memories of this special place, but also a renewed connection to your creative practice and the inspiration that comes from sharing dedicated time in such a visually rich and varied landscape with a small group of like-minded photographers.
Please note:
This is a general outline of how the workshop may unfold. Each day’s schedule and shooting locations will be determined in response to weather, light, tide conditions, and the creative interests of the group. Our goal is to make the most of Skye’s ever-changing moods and maximise opportunities for extraordinary light and atmospheric conditions. Plans will be discussed and adapted each evening for the following day.

This trip is not physically demanding — we won’t be covering long distances on foot or climbing steep mountains. However, the rough terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions can feel challenging at times. It is possible to experience three seasons in one day.
The tour begins and ends at Inverness Airport, where you will be collected and transferred by car to and from the Isle of Skye. You will need to arrange your own travel to Inverness Airport.
Transport during the trip will be by minibus or passenger cars.
When arranging your flights, please carefully review the allowances for both checked baggage and hand luggage on your outbound and return journeys, as weight and size restrictions apply. Full details can be found on your airline’s website.
If necessary, smaller items such as lenses, camera bodies and spare batteries may be carried in the pockets of a large coat or photography vest, as these are not typically weighed. Please note that adherence to baggage regulations remains your own responsibility.
To make travel easier, both on the flight and during photography outings on the island, it’s important to keep your luggage to a minimum. Soft bags or flexible suitcases are preferable, as they are easier to stack and transport.
In October, on the Isle of Skye, you can experience several seasons in a single day, with periods of sunshine, rain and strong winds. These rapidly changing conditions are part of what makes the islands so rewarding for landscape photographers, creating dramatic skies and exceptional light. Temperatures are typically between 7°C and 11°C, but the wind and rain can make it feel considerably colder, so warm clothing is essential.
