The Unique Island of Sri Lanka: The Hidden Safari Destination

For wildlife photographers, Sri Lanka may not be the first place that comes to mind, yet it is a true hidden gem. The island is home to numerous national parks brimming with life, and because it remains relatively unknown, most parks are still free from mass tourism.

We stay in comfortable lodges surrounded by nature and focus on just four carefully selected parks – each chosen for their outstanding photographic opportunities. This allows us to spend more time where it matters most: observing, waiting, and capturing the perfect image. Our programme includes both safaris and guided walks, offering the chance to photograph large mammals as well as smaller, more intimate subjects. In short, Sri Lanka is the perfect destination for photographers seeking an intimate and authentic wildlife experience.

Sri Lanka National Parks We Will Visit

Each of the four parks we will visit on this photography trip have different habitats including open grasslands, mature forests, picturesque wetlands, rainforest and all, a high density of animals. In total, Sri Lanka is home to over 44 species of mammals and more than 200 bird species, including 35 endemic species that are found only in Sri Lanka. Visiting these four parks will ensure our best chances of spotting and capturing Sri Lanka’s diverse fauna and flora.

1. Wilpattu National Park – Leopards, Sloth Bears, Water Buffalo

Wilpattu National Park is one of the most beautiful and diverse parks in Sri Lanka. In addition to leopards, it is home to around 30 other mammal species, including elephants, sloth bears, sambar deer, water buffalo, and mongooses. The park also boasts a large variety of bird species, reptiles, and amphibians. Wilpattu is considered one of the best places in Sri Lanka to spot leopards in the wild. However, most tourists tend to visit Yala National Park instead, leaving Wilpattu much quieter. This makes it an excellent choice for our visit. The park was closed for a long time, and with an area of over 1,300 km², the exact leopard population is still unclear. Nonetheless, one or more leopards are regularly spotted, indicating a healthy population.

2. Wasgamuwa National Park – Crocodiles, Monitor Lizards, Elephants

Wasgamuwa National Park is located slightly southeast of Dambulla. This national park is not heavily visited by tourists, which makes it a wonderfully tranquil location. It supports 23 species of mammals, including the wild Ceylon elephant, with approximately 150 individuals residing in the park. Besides these giants, wild buffalo, deer, leopards, and bears can also be found here. Near water sources, we will likely have the chance to photograph monitor lizards and crocodiles.

3. Gal Oya Park – Boat Trip to Witness the “Swimming Elephants”

Set around the vast waters of the Senanayake Samudraya, Gal Oya National Park is a true haven for nature photographers. Best known for its remarkable “swimming elephants” Gal Oya offers opportunities you won’t find anywhere else. Exploring the park by boat opens fresh, creative perspectives, allowing for intimate and unusual wildlife encounters.

Beyond elephants, the park supports a rich diversity of life. Colourful bird species are abundant, while primates such as the Toque Macaque and Grey Langur are frequently seen. Gal Oya is also home to all four of Sri Lanka’s wild cat species, including the elusive leopard, alongside the rarely seen Fishing Cat, Jungle Cat, and Rusty-spotted Cat. While sightings of these smaller cats are exceptionally rare, their presence is a strong indicator of the park’s rich and healthy ecosystem.

With its unique blend of forest and water, Gal Oya provides a stunning natural backdrop for your wildlife photographs.

4. Sinharaja National Park – Rainforest, Reptiles, Waterfalls and Great Birding

Deep in southwestern Sri Lanka lies Sinharaja National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one of the country’s most spectacular rainforests. A true paradise for nature lovers, Sinharaja is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity and its remarkable array of flora and fauna, much of which is found nowhere else on Earth. For herpers — reptile and amphibian enthusiasts — this rainforest is especially rewarding, offering the chance to encounter colourful snakes such as the stunning endemic green pit viper, endangered frogs like the equally endemic long-snouted tree frog, and unusual lizards including the brown-patched kangaroo lizard.

Birdlife here is just as impressive, and we will be keeping a constant lookout: around 90% of Sri Lanka’s endemic bird species can be found in Sinharaja, including the ashy-headed laughingthrush, Sri Lanka frogmouth, spot-winged thrush, and Sri Lanka grey hornbill. It’s safe to say that Sinharaja is an exceptional destination for wildlife photography, with its dense jungle, rare species, and dramatic natural scenery. The park is further enriched by numerous beautiful waterfalls, ideal for a refreshing swim or simply a moment of admiration after a hike through the forest. Altogether, Sinharaja offers a truly unforgettable opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty and wildlife of Sri Lanka’s diverse ecosystems.

A Calm Yet Focussed Itinerary

By visiting just four carefully chosen locations, this itinerary remains calm, focused, and rewarding, allowing plenty of time to connect with each area’s unique habitat and its wildlife. Our lodges are set in peaceful natural surroundings, often with gardens alive with birds and reptiles. Many overlook wetlands or rivers, and most feature swimming pools, perfect for a refreshing dip after a day in the field.

With a small group of only eight participants, everyone benefits from plenty of personal attention. Our experienced local guides know exactly where to find the wildlife, while your English tour leader, professional wildlife photographer Marc Humphrey, will be with you throughout the journey to offer guidance, inspiration, and practical support.

Marc brings a wealth of experience leading photography tours in Sri Lanka and will help you refine a wide range of techniques for capturing its extraordinary wildlife. From creating high-key images in soft, overcast light to crafting striking silhouettes and backlit photographs in the tropical sun, Marc believes there is always an opportunity to make a creative image. An excellent communicator, he explains photographic techniques in a way that is both clear and inspiring. As the trip unfolds, you’ll find your photographic skills, creativity, and confidence growing steadily.

Capturing Stunning Images

We will be transported in open-top jeeps that are elevated at the back, with two passengers seated per row to ensure no one obstructs each other while photographing. Many organisations typically place three people per row, but we consciously avoid that arrangement. To allow everyone to photograph from different angles within the jeep, we will rotate seats frequently.

Based on sightings, we will travel to specific locations during this photography trip to Sri Lanka where we can find certain species. The diverse landscape comprises beautifully vegetated plains and forests, enhanced by the enchanting light filtering through the leaves, creating a truly magical atmosphere for photography.

Join us for this remarkable photography adventure, where breathtaking landscapes and extraordinary wildlife await!

Photography, Photography, and More Photography

During our photography trip to Sri Lanka, we will focus solely on the best locations and parks, allowing multiple visits to these areas. This approach minimises travel time and maximises our opportunities to photograph. By spending more time at each location, we allow ourselves to get to know the environment and its associated wildlife better. You’ll start to understand what to expect, enabling you to anticipate and capture even better images.

Our focus will be on creating beautiful photographs rather than merely recording as many species as possible. Are you ready to elevate your photography skills amidst the unique animals and majestic landscapes of the “Beautiful Island” Sri Lanka? Grab your camera and join us on this photography journey that will awaken your senses and reignite your passion for nature photography!

Itinerary – Sri Lanka Wildlife Photography Tour “The Resplendent Island”

Join us on an unforgettable 16-day photography journey across Sri Lanka — the “Resplendent Island”. This carefully designed itinerary combines wildlife, culture and comfort, taking you through four of the country’s most remarkable national parks: Wilpattu, Wasgamuwa, Gal Oya and Sinharaja. With varied landscapes, expert guidance and plenty of time in each location, you’ll have every opportunity to capture striking images of elephants, leopards, tropical birds and rainforest life.

The itinerary below provides a general overview of our journey. Once in Sri Lanka, we keep the schedule flexible so that we can adapt to local conditions and wildlife activity.

Day 1–2: Arrival in Sri Lanka

If you’re flying from the UK to Sri Lanka, the travel usually takes around 11 hours, and with Sri Lanka 5.5 hours ahead of the UK in winter, we usually arrive the following morning. On arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be met by our local guide and transferred north to our comfortable lodge near Wilpattu National Park. There will be an opportunity to withdraw Sri Lankan rupees en route. After check-in, the rest of the day is yours to relax, settle in, and recover from the journey, ready for the wildlife adventure ahead.

Day 3: Wilpattu National Park – Sri Lanka’s Largest National Park

We begin gently this morning, allowing time to adjust to the new time zone. After breakfast, we explore the lodge grounds and surrounding area, where the first photographic opportunities often come easily, birds in the gardens, sometimes we see reptiles in the undergrowth, and lovely warm-up subjects before our first safari. After lunch, we head into Wilpattu for our first jeep drive.

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s largest national park and one of its most distinctive. Its habitat is a beautiful mosaic of dry lowland forest, dense scrub, open glades and the famous “villus”: shallow, natural rain-fed lakes that draw wildlife into clear view. These varied environments support an impressive range of animals, including Sri Lankan leopard, sloth bear, Asian elephant, golden jackal, sambar, chital, barking deer, wild boar, grey langur, ruddy mongoose, mugger crocodile, land monitor and even the rarely seen Sri Lankan chameleon. Birdlife can be equally rewarding, with possibilities including painted stork, Asian openbill, spoonbill, lesser adjutant, white ibis, forest eagle-owl, Indian paradise flycatcher, Indian pitta, Ceylon grey hornbill and Pompadour green pigeon.

Day 4: Wilpattu National Park – Crocodiles, Leopards, Sloth Bears

Before breakfast we set out on an early morning safari, taking breakfast with us into the park so we can make the most of the finest light. Returning to the same park over several days is one of the great strengths of this tour: Wilpattu is a place that rewards patience, and each visit increases our chances of memorable encounters. Leopards may appear silently along sandy tracks, sloth bears may emerge from the scrub, and the villus often attract deer, crocodiles and a wonderful variety of birds. We spend the full day immersed in the park, learning how to work with changing light, behaviour and composition in the field.

Day 5: Wilpattu National Park – Photography Tutorial and Afternoon Safari

After a relaxed breakfast, Marc will give a short, practical presentation on photographing wildlife in different weather and light conditions — from harsh midday sun to softer overcast conditions and low-light forest scenes. This is followed by time for questions, technique discussion and camera settings before we head back into Wilpattu after lunch for another afternoon safari. With more time in the park, we can refine our approach: wider environmental images around the villus, intimate portraits of deer and elephants, action shots of birds in flight, and more patient work for elusive mammals.

Day 6: Wilpattu National Park – Final day in the Park

This morning we enjoy our final full-day safari in Wilpattu. By now, the rhythm of the park will begin to feel familiar: dry forest, quiet tracks, open water, and that constant sense that something special may appear at any moment. A final full day gives us the chance not only to improve our images, but also to revisit subjects in better light, work more creatively, and make the most of one of Sri Lanka’s finest dry-zone wildernesses.

Day 7: Wasgamuwa National Park – Dry Zone Wildlife

We leave Wilpattu and travel to Wasgamuwa, a richly varied park in Sri Lanka’s dry zone. After checking in at our hotel, we spend time exploring the gardens and nearby surroundings for some relaxed observational shooting. Later, we enjoy an informal photo review session, a chance to share images, discuss technique, and spark ideas for the days ahead.

Wasgamuwa is defined by a mix of tropical dry mixed evergreen forest, riverine forest along the Mahaweli and Amban rivers, wetlands, and wide grass-dominated open plains. This diversity of habitat makes it excellent for wildlife photography and particularly strong for elephants and birdlife.

Day 8–9: Wasgamuwa National Park – Elephants, Water Buffalo, Birding

Over the next two mornings we explore Wasgamuwa by jeep, searching the river margins, forest edges and open plains for wildlife. This is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to spend time with Asian elephants, often seen feeding in herds in the grasslands or moving through the forest edge. Other mammals may include leopard, sloth bear, golden jackal, water buffalo, sambar deer, wild boar, and many more. The birdlife is especially rich, with chances of painted stork, Brahminy kite, Sri Lanka junglefowl, yellow-fronted barbet, red-faced malkoha, Sri Lanka green pigeon, Sri Lanka wood-pigeon, brown fish-owl, Indian pitta and, with luck, the wonderfully cryptic Sri Lanka frogmouth. In the afternoons, we enjoy gentle walks near the hotel, focusing on the smaller details of the landscape: dragonflies, flowers, butterflies, reptiles and whatever else presents itself close to home.

Day 10: Gal Oya National Park – Sri Lanka’s Least Visited National Park

After breakfast we continue east to Gal Oya, one of Sri Lanka’s least-visited and most remote national parks. On arrival, we check in, enjoy lunch, and then have the remainder of the day at leisure. You may wish to relax by the pool, edit photographs, or take photos in the lodge garden.

Gal Oya lies in Sri Lanka’s intermediate zone and offers a particularly beautiful mix of monsoon forest, grassland, evergreen valleys, granite hills and the vast Senanayake Samudraya reservoir with its wooded islands and inlets. It feels very different from the parks we have visited so far: more rugged, more spacious, and shaped everywhere by water.

Day 11: Gal Oya National Park – Boat Safari to Photograph Swimming Elephants

This morning we take one of the great wildlife experiences in Sri Lanka: a boat safari on the reservoir within Gal Oya National Park. Gal Oya is famous for its swimming elephants, and with luck we may witness the unforgettable sight of elephants crossing between islands, one of the most distinctive wildlife spectacles in the country. We may also encounter mugger crocodiles basking on rocks, as well as water buffalo, wild boar, deer, toque macaque, grey langur, golden jackal and a wide variety of waterbirds. Birders will want to watch for species such as white-bellied sea eagle, along with bee-eaters and other wetland and woodland birds.

Day 12: Gal Oya National Park – Safari Drive

We begin today with a jeep safari into Gal Oya National Park, where the park’s more secretive wildlife can sometimes reveal itself. We may encounter monkeys, sloth bear, water buffalo, deer and other mammals, though some of these are, of course, elusive (especially the four cat species found in Sri Lanka: leopard, fishing cat, jungle cat, rusty-spotted cat). The birdlife is excellent too, with possibilities including crimson barbet, Sri Lanka green pigeon, Sri Lanka grey hornbill, orange-billed babbler, scimitar babbler, Sri Lanka woodshrike, Sri Lanka white-eye, hill myna, junglefowl and spurfowl. After lunch, we return to the lake for another chance to photograph elephants and other wildlife drawn to the water’s edge, making the most of the softer afternoon light.

Day 13: Sinharaja Forest Reserve – Rainforest Photography

After breakfast we travel south to Sinharaja, Sri Lanka’s most famous rainforest and one of the biological jewels of the island – also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once we have checked in and settled at our lodge, there will be time to explore the garden and nearby forest trails. Even around the lodge, the photography can be superb: rainforest plants, fungi, butterflies, lizards, frogs and birds often appear at close range, making this a wonderful place to slow down and switch gears from safari photography to rainforest photography.

Sinharaja is entirely different in character from the dry-zone parks. This is primary tropical lowland rainforest: humid, evergreen, densely layered and cut by ridges, valleys and a network of streams. It is the last great remnant of Sri Lanka’s original lowland rainforest and one of the best places on the island to encounter endemic wildlife.

Day 14: Sinharaja Rainforest – Endemic Birds, Frogs and Snakes

Today we explore Sinharaja with a local naturalist, working slowly through the forest in search of its remarkable endemic wildlife. This is a superb place for both bird and reptile photography – 90% of Sri Lanka’s endemic birds can be found here. Among the species we may hope to encounter are Sri Lanka blue magpie, green-billed coucal, Sri Lanka white-headed starling, Sri Lanka wood pigeon, ashy-headed babbler, and the endemic purple-faced langur. The reserve is also celebrated for its reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates, and the filtered light beneath the canopy creates beautiful opportunities for atmospheric rainforest images.

Day 15: Negombo – Photo Review and Relaxed Photography

After breakfast we drive back to a comfortable hotel near Negombo, close to the airport. The remainder of the day is free to relax, review and edit your photographs, or spend more time shooting in the hotel’s tropical garden. It is a gentle final pause in the journey, and a good moment to reflect on the variety of habitats we have explored, from dry forest and riverine plains to reservoir landscapes and rainforest.

Day 16: Negombo – Departure Day

All good things must come to an end. After breakfast we transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for our return flight to the UK, taking home not only a strong portfolio of images, but also memories of one of Asia’s richest and most rewarding wildlife destinations.
