Macro maestro shares his love of creepy-crawlies…

Emanuele Biggi, aka spiderman, nature and conservation photographer, TV presenter, frog and insect nerd. Emanuele will lead us into a eight-legged world, which is way more vast and rich than one could think. A often underrated world of tiny but skillful hunters, parents, divers and engineers.

Spiders live all over the world, except perhaps on the poles. They are woven into every aspect of our life on this planet. Many people often kill spiders as vermin and others keep them as pets. The common thread in Emanuelle Biggi’s story is that we must understand that spiders are a precious ally in our own existence..

The survival of the human species on Earth is subjected to the survival of the other forms of life, not the contrary. It’s all about biodiversity. Our world is a playground for life and death, where the fulcrum is the health of every ecosystem. By losing a “piece” of nature, we lose part of us, including a sense of beauty and culture.

Exploring the disconnect

Pie Aerts is a Dutch documentary and wildlife photographer with a genuine interest in conflict stories between humans and wildlife. Through his lens he investigates the complicated relationship between animals, humans and nature. In March 2020, when the world came to a stop, Pie started Prints for Wildlife. A fundraising that raised $ 700,000 for conservation / conservation in just one month.

Pie feels the urge more than ever to be “the voice of our planet”. He really feels like the stories that he tells should give the places he goes to a voice. In the past 5 years, Pie has visited some extremely remote corners of our planet. There he has documented the diminishing connection we have with our natural environment and with each other.

Many of his photos show how the world is doing anno 2020. We live in a world that is rapidly individualising and as a result we collectively care about ourselves and our own struggle for survival more than ever. In fact, we are losing connection, with each other and with the planet we live on. And that’s a very dangerous thing because people stop caring. People will only fight for what they see and understand.

Pie hopes that his photos contribute to making a change and to encourage people to care again. That they make people fall in love again with their surroundings and with each other. Because if you love something, you’re willing to fight for it, whether it’s a landscape, an animal or your neighbors. And that’s what our planet needs.

Pie will discuss his findings during this lecture through beautiful images. He also talks about his vision of effective conservation.

The power of simplicity

Manon Bruijn is best known for her fox photos (hugely intriguing animals). BBC Earth has shared a photo of her a number of times and several photos have been published in nature magazines. Photographing a stressed animal is an absolute ‘no-go’ for her. As soon as a fox sticks its tongue out to her (a sign of stress), she takes flight. Aggressive deer are more likely to chase her than the other way around…

She loves it when a photo tells a story, but the story does not immediately reveal itself and her imagination is stimulated. The power of wonder. She is also an emotional person. If an image evokes a certain emotion in her, she can enjoy it intensely. She can be very happy with a dreamy atmosphere, beautiful details and tranquility in a photo.

She will explain how she does it during this inspiring and informative lecture.

For example, why do minimalist photos radiate enormous power to Manon? Why does she use black and white, contrasts, high and low key, contours and silhouettes that much? Manon answers these and other questions. She also gives practical tips & tricks that you can apply immediately. In any case, Manon hopes to convey her passion for photography and nature to you!

A Tribute to Mother Earth

In the year 2019 Marsel van Oosten became Wildlife Photographer of the Year with a photo of two Golden Snub-nosed monkeys entitled ‘The Golden Couple’. An image that he’s not satisfied with at all. I am always very critical of my own work. I never think it’s good enough. Fifteen years ago he had a desk job as an art director. A very different kind of life!

During this world premiere, Marsel van Oosten gives us a preview of his new book that will be published next April. The book consists largely of his award-winning work, his most popular images, his personal favorites and many new and never-before-published photos. It is a combination of nature and landscape photography – both in color and in black and white. The depictions of exotic animals and undiscovered landscapes from five different continents are stunning.

But for Marsel this is not only a collection of beautiful photos. It is a visual tribute to Mother Earth and a warning that nature is under serious threat. Our attention is desperately needed! During his lecture, Marsel will discuss the conservation side of the images. With a number of images, he tells us how they were made using fascinating “behind the scenes” material. Make sure you don’t miss this lecture!
